Introduction
:

A term Natural Science is coined by Lobester (1861) included the study of botany and zoology gradually these subject were separated and ZOOLOGY now is the branch of science which deals with the studies of animals and its life, biosystematics, genetics etc. This science originated in the work of Hippocrates, Aristotle and Piny. The contribution of individuals such as Carolus Linnaeus (system of nomenclature), Louis Agassis, Thomas H. Huxley, Richard Owen (Homology) Georges Cuvier (Comparative anatomy), Claude Bernard (homeostasis), Charles Darwin (Natural selection) and G. J. Mendel (Inheritance) etc. greatly advanced the field .

Establishment

Department of zoology was established in July 1965 with B. Sc. first year class. Earlier department was one man army with twenty students. From the academic year 1967- 68 department has full fledge

B. Sc. course. At present (2012 - 13) there are 78 students studying in Zoology at UG level. Out of total strength 33.61% students were occupy they zoology, out of that 58.22% were girls.

The Zoology Department has excellent teaching facilities including an exceptionally well-equipped laboratory, Museum specimens of different classes for systematic and ecological study, charts, slides and educational aids. Modern techniques like OHP and PPT are also used to learn students along with traditional for their deep sense of subject. All said subjects are taught by lecture and practical work. The practical work is mainly in the laboratory, but there are some opportunities to carried out practicals at Fields.

In the final year Zoology students will undertake a research project which can take place in the field.

The members of department conduct research and teaching in areas ranging from biosystematics, molecular biology to climate change. Now days department has available research facilities, presently two research students are working for Ph. D. degree and two has awarded M. Phil. Degree in the same discipline under the guidance of Dr. Laxmikant V. Shinde.

Objectives

To impart the basic education in zoology
To acquaint the students with diversities in animal life.
To create awareness in students about biodiversity its need for survive life on earth.
Emphasis on ecological importance of fauna.
To motivate the students to start small scale industries like sericulture, aquaculture, poultry etc. to providing scientific information.
Motivate the students for basic research and applied research to giving them project work.
Arrange the seminar or lecturer on different aspects to improve the knowledge.
